Kitchen and bathroom remodel at the same time: what goes first

Kitchen and bathroom remodel at the same time: what goes first

Key takeaways

  • You can have one company do the kitchen and a bathroom, and every Bulldog project gets a dedicated project coordinator, so you aren't running two contractors' schedules yourself.
  • The shower area is the one-day job, gutted to the studs and rebuilt, with your first shower the next morning.
  • The kitchen takes longer, in days rather than months, and your coordinator gives you a detailed schedule before work starts.
  • Pick the finishes for both rooms before either is ordered so the counters, cabinets and hardware carry from one room to the next.

The house in West Chester went up in 1994, and two rooms still look it. The kitchen has the honey oak cabinets and the laminate counter with a seam by the sink. Upstairs, the tub-shower in the master bath has a cultured-marble surround that turned yellow years ago. If you're selling in two or three years, it's tempting to do a kitchen and bathroom remodel at the same time and be done with both. These are the questions couples in that spot ask before they book, with straight answers.

Planning a kitchen and bathroom remodel at the same time

Can one company do the kitchen and the bathroom together?

Yes. Bulldog designs and installs both, with our own crews: showers, tubs, wall systems and vanities in the bathroom, and cabinets, countertops, backsplashes, sinks and faucets in the kitchen. Every project gets a design consultant and a dedicated project coordinator who keeps you informed from start to finish.

Is it better than hiring two contractors?

For most couples, yes, and the reason is the calendar. With two contractors you get two consultations, two quotes and two start dates, and you're the one who works out which crew is in the house on which day. If the kitchen crew runs late, nobody tells the bathroom crew but you.

With one company, our own crews do both rooms and your project coordinator keeps you informed. You still get a written quote after the consultant measures, and you can still get other bids. Ask each one the same thing: who do I call when the two rooms overlap?

A specialist for each room is a fair choice too, if you already know and like a tile setter or a cabinet shop. Plan on doing the coordinating yourself.

Do I have to do both rooms at once?

No. You can start with one part of the kitchen (countertops, a backsplash, a sink and faucet, or organizers) and do the bathroom now, or the other way around. If the cabinet boxes are solid, refacing puts new doors, drawer fronts and veneer on them, which is less time and less mess than a tear-out. Can my cabinets be refaced? is a five-minute check you can do tonight with a flashlight.

Choosing finishes that carry from room to room

How do I make the kitchen and bathroom look like they belong together?

Pick both rooms' finishes before either is ordered. The consultant comes to the house, measures, brings samples of colors and finishes, walks you through the options and recommends what fits. With samples for both rooms, you can hold the kitchen counter sample next to the vanity top sample in your own light.

Three things carry well from room to room:

  • Counter material. Kitchen counters and vanity tops both come in quartz, granite or solid surface.
  • Cabinet door style. Shaker, flat-panel or raised-panel in the kitchen, and a vanity in a matching color and door style upstairs.
  • Metal finish. Shower hardware comes in matte black, brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze or chrome, and cabinet pulls and knobs come in finishes to match your faucet and lighting.

They don't have to match. A white shaker kitchen and a marble-look shower with brushed nickel in both rooms reads as one house. Before anything is ordered, we can show you your new kitchen or bath in 3D, which catches a dark counter on dark cabinets better than two samples on a table.

Does matching matter if we're selling?

It can help the house read as one house to a buyer, though no survey we found measures matched finishes on their own. In the National Association of Realtors' 2025 Remodeling Impact Report, Realtors named a kitchen upgrade (48%) and a bathroom renovation (35%) among the projects with the biggest increase in buyer demand. That's buyer demand for each room, not a measure of matched finishes or a promise about your sale price, and nobody can promise you one.

What to schedule first

Should the bathroom or the kitchen go first?

Your project coordinator gives you a detailed schedule before work starts. The two jobs are different sizes, and that shapes the order.

The bathroom we do is a wet-area gut: the crew takes the tub or shower area to the studs in the morning and has the new base, solid-surface walls and fixtures in by evening. You take your first shower the next morning. Wet-area gut renovation explained covers what comes out and what stays.

The kitchen takes longer. Many kitchen updates take a few days, and a full kitchen with new cabinets takes longer than that. Either way, it's done in days, not months.

There's a case for asking for the shower first. The wet area is done in a day, and you have a new shower to come back to on the evenings the kitchen is apart. Tell the coordinator if a date matters to you, like a listing date or a holiday with family in town.

Is the whole bathroom done in one day?

No. The one-day part is the wet area, the tub or shower and its walls. The rest of the room (floor, vanity, toilet, any layout change) is a separate, longer job, and we tell you that before you sign.

Living in the house while both rooms are going

Can we stay in the house?

Yes. For the bathroom, we ask that an adult be home at the start and the end of install day so we can go over the work with you. The crew cleans up before they leave. One-day bathroom remodel: what to expect runs that day with the clock on it.

How do we cook while the kitchen is torn up?

Set up a short-term kitchen in the dining room before the kitchen crew starts. A folding table, the microwave, the coffee maker and a toaster oven cover most meals. Paper plates save you from washing dishes in the bathroom sink. Pack the cabinets the weekend before, and ask your coordinator which days you'll be without a working sink so you can plan around them.

What if we only have one full bathroom?

Plan for the install day and the night after. The shower is out of use from the morning walkthrough until the next morning. Shower that morning before the crew arrives, or at a gym or a friend's house in Mason that evening.

Price, promotions and the quote

How much does it cost to do both?

We don't post prices, because the number comes from your house. For the bathroom, the size of the shower area, the base and door you pick, the fixtures and what's under the old tub set the price. For the kitchen, it's reface or replace, the counter material, the sink and how many organizers go in. A consultant measures both rooms and gives you a written quote. Kitchen and bathroom projects can both use financing on approved credit.

Is there a discount for doing both rooms?

The site doesn't list a two-room discount. Ask about current promotions and check Current Promos before the visit. Offers change, they have to be mentioned when you book the estimate, and they can't be combined with each other. Your consultant helps you pick the one that saves you the most. Bulldog also has a discount for homeowners 65 and older and savings for active-duty military and veterans.

What does the warranty cover?

The products and the work carry a lifetime warranty for as long as you own the home, in both rooms. If something isn't right, we make it right.
