One-day shower replacement in Cincinnati: what it covers, what it doesn't, and how to judge a bid

One-day shower replacement in Cincinnati: what it covers, what it doesn't, and how to judge a bid

Key takeaways

  • A one-day shower replacement takes the tub or shower area to the studs and rebuilds it with a new base, walls and fixtures, with the first shower the next morning.
  • The floor, vanity, toilet, layout changes and plumbing moves are separate and take longer, and a good contractor says so before you sign.
  • The price depends on what a consultant measures in your bathroom, so judge bids on what they include in writing, not on a flyer.
  • With promotional financing, qualified buyers can get a new shower for as low as $150 a month, on approved credit.

There are three flyers on the kitchen counter in your Anderson Township ranch, and all three say "one day." One shows a whole bathroom. One shows a tub with a new shell in it. The third doesn't say what's in the day at all. You want a new shower in the hall bath and you'd like to know what you're comparing before anyone sits on your couch.

A one-day shower replacement, done the way we do it, takes the tub or shower area to the studs and rebuilds it with a new base, new walls and new fixtures. The crew is done by evening, and you take your first shower the next morning. The floor, the vanity, the toilet, a new layout and any plumbing moved to another wall are separate jobs that take longer. Anyone selling you "one day" should say that before you sign.

Each section below answers one question Cincinnati homeowners ask us about the job and points to the post that goes deeper.

What a one-day shower replacement covers

The one-day part of the job is the wet area: the tub or shower base, the walls around it, and the new fixtures in that wall. On install day the crew takes out the old tub or base, the tile, and the wall surface the tile was stuck to, whether that's a mortar bed, greenboard or plaster, back to the studs. With the wall open, the crew sees the subfloor and the pipes.

Then the new pieces go in. The base, walls and trim were measured in your bathroom at the consultation and made to those numbers before install day, which is why the day works at all. The walls are solid-surface panels over a prepared substrate: non-porous, with no grout lines, and resistant to mold, mildew and stains.

Some products on the market go over the old tile or drop a new shell into the old tub. Those are a different job. The first thing to find out from any bid is whether the old tile and the wall behind it come out. Wet-area gut renovation explained lists what comes out, what goes in and what stays, piece by piece.

What takes longer than one day

"One day" applies to the shower area. The rest of the room runs on its own schedule.

Part of the bathroomDone in the one day? What to expect
Tub or shower areaYesGutted to the studs and rebuilt, first shower next morning
FloorNoStays as it is, or a separate, longer job
Vanity and toiletNoStay in place and in use, or a separate job
Layout changes, plumbing moved to a new wallNoTake longer, and we say so up front

A lot of 1960s and 70s bathrooms have a floor and vanity in better shape than the shower, since they don't sit under a showerhead every morning. In those rooms the shower-only job makes sense. Where it doesn't is a floor that gives farther out than the tub edge, or around the toilet. That floor is its own problem and shouldn't wait for the shower. Can you replace only the shower and keep the vanity and floor? covers when that plan works, when it doesn't, and the strip of floor at the old tub edge worth asking about.

Why the shower is usually what fails in an older Cincinnati bathroom

The houses here are old, and so are a lot of the showers in them. In Hamilton County the median home was built in 1963, and about 73 percent of homes went up before 1980, according to the Ohio Department of Development's 2025 county profile.

An older tiled shower usually fails from the face inward. Water gets through worn grout or the caulk at the tub, into the board behind the tile, and down to the subfloor. The EPA says water-damaged areas should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. A wall that takes on water through worn grout every morning doesn't get a full day or two to dry out between showers.

The showers our crews replace are mostly 20 years old and older, and 20 years is about where regrouting stops paying for itself. Under that, with a solid tap on the tile and a dry floor, cleaning, sealing and new caulk are the right call. The signs your shower needs replacing puts the checks in the order a shower fails, so you can tell which side of that line you're on.

What install day looks like

Install day starts in the morning with the same crew you met at the consultation. An adult needs to be home at the start and the end of the day; the hours in between are yours. In most houses the job takes one visit.

The morning is demo, the loud part: the old door, tile, wall surface and tub come out and leave with the crew. Once the area is open to the studs, the crew sees the subfloor and the pipes. The new base and walls go in after that, then the fixtures and the door.

By evening the new base, walls and fixtures are in. The crew cleans up, walks you through the shower, leaves written care instructions and registers your warranty. You don't shower that night. Your first shower is the next morning.

Your part before the day is small, and how to get your house ready for a one-day shower install has the full checklist. Clear the shelves in the tub area, move what you care about off the vanity, and pick up the bath mat. If the hall bath is the one being done, plan on the master for that evening. What sets the price of a one-day shower replacement

We don't post prices for this job, and you won't find a number here. The price comes from measuring your bathroom, and a consultant gives you a written quote after the measuring. That quote is free.

What moves the number up or down is something you can see coming:

  • The size of the tub or shower area. A five-foot alcove takes less material than an oversized corner shower.
  • The base. A standard curbed base, a low-threshold base, a base with a built-in seat, or a neo-angle corner base.
  • The door and glass. A curtain rod, a sliding door, a hinged door or a frameless one, and the glass thickness and finish.
  • Fixtures and extras. A rain or handheld showerhead, a recessed niche, shelves, and the wall pattern you pick.
  • What's under the old tub. Nobody sees that until the wall is open, so ask how your quote handles it before you sign.

Financing a one-day shower

With promotional financing, qualified buyers get a new grout-free, mold-resistant shower for as low as $150 a month, or 12 months no interest. Both are on approved credit, and your own payment depends on your quote, the plan and the lender's approval. Get the shower now and pay later.

Before you sign any no-interest plan, ours or anyone's, ask whether it's deferred interest. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that on a deferred-interest promotion, if a balance is left at the end of the promotional period, you owe the interest back to the original date of the charge. Divide the balance by the months in the plan and pay that, not the minimum.

How to judge any bid for a one-day shower

In Montgomery or Fort Thomas, Kentucky, a homeowner with one bid should get a second. Franchise one-day bath companies and local remodelers both sell this job, and the bids look alike on the first page. Franchise one-day bath companies vs. a local remodeler compares the two on five points. These are the questions that separate them:

  1. Do the old tile and the wall behind it come out to the studs, or does something go over them?
  2. Are the base and walls measured in my bathroom and made to those numbers?
  3. Who is in my bathroom on install day: the company's own crew or a subcontractor?
  4. How does the written quote handle what the crew finds once the wall is open, and can the price change after demo?
  5. Who answers the phone about the warranty in year five, and what does the warranty cover?

Get the answer to question 4 in writing, with the quote, from every company including us. How to read a bathroom remodel quote, line by line shows where that answer belongs. And know your cancellation right. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule covers a sale of $25 or more made at your home, and your right to cancel for a full refund lasts until midnight of the third business day after the sale. Saturdays count as business days; Sundays and federal holidays don't.

Three questions to ask a bathroom contractor before a deposit goes further on who installs, what "licensed and insured" means in Ohio, and why the warranty is only as good as the company behind it.

When a one-day shower isn't the right call

Tile is a good product. A tile contractor who rebuilds with cement backer board, a waterproofing layer and new tile gives you a sound shower that lasts a long time. It has grout joints that need sealing, and the setting and cure times spread the job across several days. If you want real stone or a hand-set mosaic, that's the route, and we'll tell you so.

A one-day replacement also isn't the answer if what you want is a new floor plan. Moving the shower to the other wall, or pushing it into a linen closet, is a layout change, and it runs longer.

And if your shower is 15 years old, taps solid and sits on a dry floor, you may not need any of this yet. Clean the grout, seal it and recaulk the tub. Grout-free shower walls: an honest guide compares the two kinds of walls over 20 years for readers still deciding between them.

How Bulldog does a one-day shower replacement

We've worked in Cincinnati bathrooms since 1993, with our own installation crews. The consultant comes to the house, measures the tub or shower area, brings samples of colors and finishes, walks you through the options and leaves a written quote. The same background-checked crew you met at the consultation comes back to install, and a project coordinator is your contact from the first visit to the last.

On install day we gut the shower area to the studs and rebuild it in a day: new base, solid-surface walls with no grout lines, fixtures and door. The marble and travertine looks are what most of our customers pick, and the same material comes in subway, herringbone and hexagon patterns for people who want the look of tile without grout to scrub. Colors and patterns shows the full range. Care afterward is mild soap and water, with no abrasive pads and no harsh cleaners.

The lifetime warranty covers the product and our work for as long as you own the home. If something isn't right, we make it right.
